With its headquarters located in Bentonville, Arkansas, Walmart Inc. is a global retail firm based in the United States that runs a network of hypermarkets, also known as supercenters, cheap department stores, and grocery stores around the country. Sam and James "Bud" Walton, brothers, started the business in the neighboring town of Rogers, Arkansas in 1962. On October 31, 1969, the corporation was formed under Delaware General Corporation Law. Additionally, it owns and runs the retail warehouses for Sam's Club.

As of October 31, 2022, Walmart operated 10,586 shops and clubs under 46 distinct names in 24 countries.In North America, the corporation is known as Walmart, whereas in Mexico and Central America it is called Walmart de México y Centroamérica. In India, it is known as Flipkart Wholesale. It has a significant ownership in Massmart in South Africa and operates entirely in Chile. Walmart has only owned a minority part in Walmart Brasil since August 2018. The company was renamed Grupo Big in August 2019, and Walmart owns 20% of its shares, with private equity firm Advent International controlling 80% of the business. Eventually, on June 7, 2022, they concluded a $7 billion deal to sell their Grupo Big shares to French retailer Carrefour.


As to the Fortune Global 500 ranking published in October 2022, Walmart stands as the largest firm globally in terms of sales. Walmart declared in February 2023 that its overall revenue for the fiscal year 2023 was $611.3 billion. With 2.2 million workers, Walmart is the biggest employer in the private sector globally. Since the Walton family controls the corporation, it is a publicly listed family enterprise. Through their holding company Walton Enterprises as well as their individual assets, Sam Walton's heirs own more than half of Walmart.In 2019, Walmart emerged as the leading grocery retailer in the United States, with US operations accounting for 65 percent of the company's total sales of US$510.329 billion.

In 1972, Walmart debuted on the New York Stock Exchange. It was the most lucrative retailer in the United States by 1988, and by October 1989, it had surpassed all others in terms of revenue. The company's initial geographic reach was restricted to the South and lower Midwest, but by the early 1990s, it had locations all over the country. November 1989 saw the opening of Sam's Club in New Jersey, while July 1990 saw the opening of the first location in California, in Lancaster. The first major Walmart shop in the Northeast opened its doors in York, Pennsylvania, in October 1990.

American business tycoon Samuel Moore Walton is most known for creating Walmart and Sam's Club, two retail establishments he launched in 1962 and 1983, respectively, in Midwest City, Oklahoma, and Rogers, Arkansas. As it expanded, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. became both the largest private employer in the world and the largest firm globally in terms of sales. Walton had the title of richest person in the US for a while. His family's net worth, as of January 2022, was around US$240.6 billion, making them the richest family in the United States for a number of years running. Walton passed away from blood cancer in 1992 at the age of 74. He was buried in the Bentonville Cemetery near his longtime Bentonville, Arkansas, residence.

    Moosejaw.com is an online and physical store that specializes in outdoor recreation gear and clothes for camping, snowboarding, hiking, and rock climbing. David Jaffe and Robert Wolfe, two lifelong friends who decided against becoming wilderness guides instead market camping gear, started the business in 1992. Moosejaw is well-known for its absurd "Moosejaw Madness" marketing campaign.

    In 2007, Moosejaw was bought by Dallas-based private equity company Parallel Investment Partners for an unknown sum of money. In 2009, Moosejaw was bought by the private equity company Glencoe Capital, for an undisclosed sum. In 2013, Moosejaw was bought by W Capital Partners, a private equity company, on undisclosed terms. Walmart purchased Moosejaw on February 15, 2017, paying $51 million in cash. Dick's Sporting Goods agreed to purchase Moosejaw from Walmart in February 2023 for an unknown sum.

    Hoboken, New Jersey served as the corporate home of the American online retailer Jet.com. Along with Mike Hanrahan and Nate Faust, Marc Lore—who had previously sold Diapers.com to Amazon.com—co-founded the business in 2014. Over the course of four venture rounds, Jet.com collected $820 million from investors including GV, Goldman Sachs, Accel Partners, Bain Capital Ventures, Alibaba Group, and Fidelity. In July 2015, the website was formally launched. It joined Walmart as a subsidiary in September 2016.

    Following a period of declining revenues on the Jet.com website following the acquisition, most Jet.com staff were moved to work on Walmart.com in June 2019, and Simon Belsham, the company president, resigned. Walmart advised customers to utilize Walmart.com in place of Jet.com after announcing on May 19, 2020, that Jet.com will be shut down on June 4.

    In April 2023, Express and management firm WHP Global agreed to acquire Bonobos from Walmart for $75 million. The deal was completed on May 25, 2023.
