Early Life
On March 5, 1949, Bernard Jean Étienne Arnault was born in Roubaix. "Fascination for Dior" was a trait shared by his mother, pianist Marie-Josèphe Savinel, who was the daughter of Étienne Savinel. His father, École Centrale Paris graduate Jean Léon Arnault, was a manufacturer and the owner of Ferret-Savinel, a civil engineering business. Brought up in a "strict Catholic-Auvergne" household by his pious Catholic grandmother, Arnault attended prestigious Catholic schools and studied classical piano.
Career
Arnault received his education at the Lycée Faidherbe in Lille and the Lycée Maxence Van Der Meersch in Roubaix. After completing his studies at the top engineering school in France, École Polytechnique, he started working for his father's firm in 1971. Ferret-Savinel sold the industrial construction section and became Ferinel three years later, having persuaded his father to refocus the company on real estate. The corporation rebranded its real estate arm the George V Group after purchasing a textile company and moving its headquarters. Later, the real estate holdings were sold to Compagnie Générale des Eaux (CGE), which subsequently changed its name to Nexity.
