ABOUT GAUTAM ADANI

NET WORTH : $ 43.3 BILLION

Born on June 24, 1962, Gautam Shantilal Adani is an Indian billionaire industrialist. He is the chairman and founder of the Adani Group, a multinational conglomerate that develops and operates ports in India.

Adani has been characterized as having a close relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since Modi became India's prime minister, his companies have secured numerous contracts related to energy and infrastructure both domestically and internationally, giving rise to accusations of cronyism. Adani and his family's wealth fell by more than half in January 2023 as a result of charges of stock manipulation and fraud by American short selling activist firm Hindenburg Research.

Early Life

Adani was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on June 24, 1962, into a Gujarati Jain family consisting of Shantaben Adani, the mother, and Shantilal Adani, the father. He's got seven siblings. His parents had moved to Gujarat from the northern town of Tharad. His dad owned a modest textile business.

He received his education at Ahmedabad's Sheth Chimanlal Nagindas Vidyalaya. He enrolled at Gujarat University to pursue a bachelor's degree in commerce, but he left after the second year. Adani enjoyed business, but not the textile company run by his father.

Career

Adani relocated to Mumbai in 1978 as a teenager to work for Mahendra Brothers as a diamond sorter.

His older brother Mahasukhbhai Adani asked him to oversee the operations of a plastics unit he had purchased in Ahmedabad in 1981. This business endeavor proved to be Adani's entry point into international trade via the importation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

He began bringing in primary polymers for small-scale industries in 1985. Adani founded Adani Exports, the holding company of the Adani Group, in 1988. It is currently called Adani Enterprises. The business initially dealt in commodities related to agriculture and power.

The Gujarati government announced managerial outsourcing of the Mundra Port in 1994, and Adani was awarded the contract in 1995.

Adani founded Adani Power, the Adani Group's power division, in 1996. The largest private producer of thermal power in the nation, Adani Power, owns thermal power plants with a combined capacity of 4620 MW.

In 2002, a senior M S Shoes official filed a cheating complaint, leading to Adani's arrest by Delhi Police on the basis of a non-bailable warrant (NBW). The following day, after learning that the parties were trying to reach a compromise, the court withdrew the NBW.

Twelve people were charged by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) in 2012, including Adani, with engaging in fraudulent activities and criminal conspiracy pertaining to the purchase and sale of shares. Adani Agro allegedly supplied money and shares for conducting unlawful operations, according to SFIO. In May of 2014, Adani and the other accused in this case were cleared by a local court in Mumbai.Nevertheless, the clean chit granted to Adani in this case was overturned by a Mumbai sessions court in 2020.

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) awarded Adani the world's largest solar bid in May 2020, with a value of US$6 billion. Adani Green will undertake the 8000MW photovoltaic power plant project, while Adani Solar will add 2000MW of solar cell and module manufacturing capacity.

Adani acquired a 74% stake in Mumbai International Airport, India's second busiest after Delhi

Speaking at the Bloomberg India Economic Forum in November 2021, Adani announced that the group is investing US$70 billion in a new green energy venture. He revealed further information in July 2022 about how this investment will be used to construct three enormous factories: wind turbine plants, solar power plants, and electrolyzers (used to produce green hydrogen).

He surpassed Mukesh Ambani to become Asia's richest person in February 2022, and Fortune ranked him as the third richest person in the world in August 2022.

Adani Group subsidiary AMG Media Networks Limited (AMNL) announced in August 2022 that it intended to acquire RRPR Holding, which owned 29.18% of national news broadcaster NDTV, and extended an open offer to purchase an additional 26%. The company's founders, former journalist Radhika Roy and her husband Prannoy Roy, are economists. According to a statement from NDTV, Adani obtained his stake through a third party without telling them, and the deal was completed "without discussion, consent or notice."Due to Adani's perceived closeness to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, concerns were also raised about editorial independence in India in light of this bid. It was stated that Adani held the largest shareholding in NDTV by December 2022. According to the Economist, prior to Adani acquiring NDTV, Despite being "critical of the government," the news channel was once supine.
