With its headquarters located in Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland, Nestlé S.A. is a worldwide conglomerate firm focused on food and drink industry. Based on sales and other indicators, it has been the largest food company in the world that is publicly held since 2014. It was number sixty-four on the Fortune Global 500 in 2017 and number thirty-three on the Forbes Global 2000 list of the biggest publicly traded firms in 2016.
Baby food (some with human milk oligosaccharides), medical food, bottled water, cereals for breakfast, coffee and tea, candies, dairy products, ice cream, frozen meals, pet foods, and snacks are among the items offered by Nestlé. Nestlé sells more than 1 billion Swiss francs (about US$1.1 billion) worth of products annually under twenty-nine brands, including Stouffer's, Vittel, Maggi, Nesquik, Nescafé, Kit Kat, and Smarties. Nestlé employs over 339,000 people, operates in 189 countries, and has 447 plants. It is one of the major investors in L'Oreal, the biggest cosmetics firm in the world.
Nestlé was created in 1905 by the union of the "Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé," founded in 1867 by Henri Nestlé, and the "Anglo-Swiss Milk Company," founded in 1866 by brothers George and Charles Page. During World War I and World War II, the firm saw substantial growth, broadening its product line beyond its initial sales of infant formula and condensed milk. Crosse & Blackwell in 1960, Findus in 1963, Libby's in 1971, Rowntree Mackintosh in 1988, Klim in 1998, and Gerber in 2007 are just a few of the corporate acquisitions the firm has undertaken.
The company has been involved in a number of scandals; it has been the target of criticism and boycotts due to its promotion of baby formula as a substitute for breastfeeding in developing nations (where access to clean water may be limited), its use of child labor in the production of cocoa, and its development and promotion of bottled water.
The firm carried on operating in Russia after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. For this reason, Nestlé was classified by Ukraine as an International Sponsor of War in November 2023.
